Physiotherapy is one of the allied health professions. It is provided by physical therapists who promote, maintain, or restore health through physical examination, diagnosis, prognosis, patient education, physical intervention, rehabilitation, disease prevention, and health promotion.
It promotes movement, helps ease pain and restore function. Physiotherapists assess a patient’s condition and develop a treatment plan unique to that individual. Physiotherapists are highly skilled and autonomous health care professionals who provide safe quality client-centred physiotherapy through a commitment to service availability, accessibility and excellence. A physiotherapist works with people of all ages and treats a vast amount of health conditions.
Physiotherapists are an important component in rehabilitation, treatment and prevention of acute and chronic conditions. A physiotherapist uses a wide range of modalities to treat. Treatment can include manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and mechanical devices like ultrasound and tens machines.
You no longer need a doctor’s referral before seeing a physiotherapist. It is possible that you can see a physician and obtain a referral before seeing a physio. However, in most cases, people are free to book an appointment directly without a note from their doctor.
A physiotherapist can treat various issues like Sports injuries, Musculoskeletal, Neurological issues, paediatric care and other problems as well depending upon the specialization of the physiotherapist. Some Common issues that can be treated by a physiotherapist are neck and back pain caused by problems in the muscles and skeleton. Problems in the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments, such as arthritis. Fatigue, pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of muscle strength. Loss of mobility because of trauma to the brain (Stroke) or spine, or due to diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis can all be treated.
Musculoskeletal / orthopedic physiotherapy: Used to treat conditions such as Bone Injuries, sprains, back pain, arthritis, strains, posture problems, sport and workplace injuries.
Neurological Physiotherapy : Used to treat disorders of the nervous system including strokes, spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease Other than that, based on physio’s personal interest, experience & certified trainings physiotherapists can be specialized in one or more of the following specialties Paediatric Physiotherapy, Geriatric Physiotherapy, Vestibular Rehabilitation, Cardiovascular Physiotherapy, Pulmonary Physiotherapy, Sports Physiotherapy, Women’s Health Physiotherapy, Dry Needling Physiotherapy, Cupping Therapy etc.
A Physiotherapist is a healthcare professional who helps patients to achieve maximum recovery from injury or disease and return as a contributor to the society. Working independently or as a member of the health-care team a physiotherapist aims to improve the health and independence of his / her patients. - Health promotion in community:
- Educating people about healthy lifestyle choices. This includes ergonomics and conducting health and fitness camps for screening for lifestyle diseases.
