1) Course Overview:

The Masters of Architecture in Urban Design program offers students to shift and enhance their previously set paradigm to the macro scale of perceiving the underlined architectural urban scenarios. This course addresses the realm of the urbane by contextualizing the different practices and cultures of the cities. The famous German Architect Walter Gropius said: “Society needs a good image of itself. That is the true job of an architect.” Our Masters in Architecture (M-Arch) Programme is designed to teach graduates, various dynamics of city design, and the scientific and artistic factors that make up the study of the urbane. The various disciplines of this program include History and Pedagogy, Urban or Rural Planning, Construction Management, Architecture Theory, Landscape Design, etc. We focus on the all-round development of students, polishing their professional, artistic and entrepreneurial abilities in the process.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidate should have passed B.Arch. with 50% aggregate or equivalent course recognised by the Council of Architecture.

M.Arc Syllabus

The Masters in Urban Design program offers students to shift and enhance their previously set paradigm to the macro scale of perceiving the underlined architectural urban scenarios. It is a course of two years with each year further subdivided into two semesters. This course addresses the realm of the urbane by contextualising the different practices and cultures of the cities.
The course offers thorough understanding of planning objectives, socio-cultural backgrounds, heritage and historical values, administrative structures, governance and policies, eco-sensitive and sustainability approaches etc. thus, giving it a multifaceted approach.
The course gives a firsthand experience to the students to be working along with planning authorities, various government organisations, non governing organisations, private practitioners, communities, citizen groups etc. It also helps students derive a strong research base in the due course of two years.

The discourse of this course is as followed:
1) Semester I Urban Design Basics
2) Semester II Perspectives in Urban design
3) Semester III Urban Design Sensitivities
4) Semester IV Thesis
In each semester, with above ideologies, the subject has been further divided in 4 principle categories to help understand the relevance of it with the laid discourse.

They are as follows:

Core :– The Core Unit has the Primary Urban Design or the Master studio format for SEM I, II and III.
The urban design studio is the primary emphasis of first three semesters and comprises of core units, where each unit is essential to conduct and drive the urban design studio. It functions as a Modular system in which each unit works along with the urban studio in reciprocation. The structure so created is to strengthen basics of different practices in Urban Design through Live Scenarios. Each semester the Emphasis of the studio will change in terms of chosen urban design practices.

Theories :– Under theories, the emphasis is on teaching foundational and Advanced theories for students to develop inquiry and skills to tackle basic urban challenges. The latter contributes to teaching organisational frameworks, decision making to analyse the existing framework. Thus, helping students to develop rational thinking, logical decision making, critical thinking and theorising in the realm of Urban Design.

Electives :– This category will give students the power to make their own choices and interact better with the course. The emphasis each year will be different. Students can create their own docket each year as per their interest. The electives will have ideologies depending upon the semester hierarchy. These will mainly fall under categories of Skill enhancement, Allied and Support.

Research :– The emphasis of this category initiates the research and development in urban design course. The units culminate into a Thesis study. This category is a specialisation in itself where students can develop themselves as Urban Researchers and Theorists.

Fees:

Annual fees for Academic Year 2023 – 24 for M. Arch program is Rs 2,55,000 per annum.
